CHAMP-AV9-product-tour.jpg

Today’s ISR applications all employ incredibly precise and wide-ranging sensors. These sensors generate huge data streams, with valuable information for our warfighters. To extract that information, and deliver it quickly, the data streams must be processed in real time. The Curtiss-Wright CHAMP-AV9 was designed to meet that need. A 6U OpenVPX COTS module, the CHAMP-AV9 has two Intel Core i7 quad-core processors, with integrated vector processing and an on-chip Graphics Processing Unit, a GPU.

Watch the CHAMP-AV9 video to learn more about this balanced design and its processing capabilities (watch the You Tube video).

Download the CHAMP-AV9 Intel Core i7 Multi-processor OpenVPX Digital Signal Processing Board factsheet or visit the Curtiss-Wright website to download the full product sheet.

FSP for Xeon E3-1268LV5?

$

I can't find any documentation that says the Skylake Firmware Support Package works with the Xeon E3-1268LV5 processor.  Can anyone confirm whether the Skylake FSP supports this processor?  If it doesn't, is there (or will there be) one that does?

I'm wanting to use the FSP with Coreboot, but I don't have hardware yet so I can't just try it....

Thanks,

Roving Reporter: Empowering Retail Associates with Tablets

$

Physical store success increasingly depends on IoT technologies. This new reality applies as much to traditional brick-and-mortar as well as hybrid stores. More and more store owners are adopting IoT technologies that enable real-time access to inventory data, as well as product location, information, and reviews. Some retailers take it even further, installing proximity beacons that can provide moment-by-moment data on where customers are in the store, plus transmit offers and other promotions to in-store customers’ smartphones and tablets.

In this dynamic new environment, sales associates need to be more than simply available on the floor to help. To convert shoppers into buyers and encourage additional purchases, they need to be knowledge workers. They need a mobile device in their hand.

An increasing number of retailers are recognizing the value of this new kind of sales associate. According to one study, 70 percent of retailers plan to train staff on mobile devices in the 2016/2017 time frame and nearly two-thirds have deployed mobile app features that are useful in the store.

Use Cases for Mobile Devices in Retail

Mobile devices, particularly tablets, are used many ways in a store (Figure 1):

  • Mobile point-of-sale (POS) solutions free sales associates from fixed checkout counters to personally serve customers on the floor, eliminate check-out lines, and create more floor space for promos and merchandise.
  • Inventory lookup and fulfillment solutions enable store associates anywhere in the store, to look up product information, check inventory at other locations, and arrange shipping when a product is not available locally.
  • Clienteling solutions track customers by their smartphone, recognizing frequent shoppers. Sales staff can access information on customer preferences and past purchases to provide a more informed, personalized experience.
  • Waitlisting solutions save customers valuable time by enabling notifications when a product is ready for pick up, when a customer service representative is available to help, or when a table at a restaurant is open.
  • Sales assist solutions give sales associates access to the information they need to be an expert on products and customers. This ready access to data can be particularly effective in customer interactions in which associates share their screen, letting customers view additional product information and reviews.
  • Dashboards provide immediate access to critical information on how many customers in store, how many in queue, number of sales associates on the floor, hot spots, promotion items, inventory levels, and more.
  • Concierge services help employees deliver a better brand experiences. Staff can use these solutions to direct customers to outside services customers may need or want in addition to what a retailer, hospitality business, or other entity offers.

Figure 1. Physical stores can use tablets in many ways to help sales associates improve the customer experience.

Advantages of Intel® Processor-based Tablets

Choosing tablets based on Intel® processors opens up a rich and growing ecosystem of IoT hardware and software solutions for increasing store efficiencies, enhancing sales associate productivity, and providing more personalized customer service. These tablets integrate wirelessly with the Intel® Retail Sensor Platform, a vertical solution based on the Intel® IoT Platform.

The Intel Retail Sensor Platform guides the use of RFID tags and sensors in brick-and-mortar stores. It gives these stores the ability to better track inventory to improve customer experiences, convert more sales, and reduce losses from overstocked, out-of-stock, or misplaced items.

Using tablets with the Intel Retail Sensor Platform enables retailers to easily implement many of the use cases described earlier, keeping sales staff informed on inventory, stocking, customer traffic, and local demand (Figure 2). Tablets enable sales associates to access this information in real time while the opportunity to make a sale is at its highest.

I am a junior in high school in a program called "Project Lead the Way" through Rochester Institute of Technology.  I was assigned a project to choose a field of Engineering and do a report on it.  In this report it involves and interview with a person that is in the field you chose (or close to it).  If you are willing to help me out you can either answer these questions in the forum or email me @jesseskiracer@gmail.com

-What do you do on a daily basis?

-How much money do you plan to be making toward the end of your career compared to the beginning? (Sorry this question was somewhat mandatory)

-What responsibilities do you have?

-How did you get started in computer engineering?

-Have you worked on any big projects throughout your career?

-What are some other companies that have jobs in this field?

-How does a person progress in this field?

-What skills are necessary?

Requesting eepromARMtool and some questions

Hello,

I'm working on a custom board equipped with an ARM Cortex processor and the i210-AT ethernet controller for the network interface. Operating system is Linux (Yocto). As I understand looking to the corresponding datasheets and usage guides we need the eepromARMtool to write the configuration parameters to the iNVM. Could someone provide me with a download link of this tool?

Further question: There are several images available to use with the EEUPDATE programming tool. From the eepromARMtool usage guide I get that these images cannot be used on ARM and the parameters must be modified within the raw byte stream to be written to the iNVM. Is this correct or is there some easier way?

Best regards,
Hannes

Monitoring and Securing the Smart Grid

Phasor measurement unit (PMUs) play a critical role in the smart grid, helping utilities dynamically assess and manage the performance of independently operated grid systems. By keeping different parts of the grid in sync, PMUs ensure that consumers get reliable delivery of electricity, at the lowest overall cost to the consumer and the service provider.

PMUs measure the magnitude and phase angle of alternating current (AC) using a common time source, such as the global positioning system (GPS). These time-tagged measurements, or phasors, give utilities a synchronized view of performance across the grid (Figure 1). When multiple phasors are taken at the same time, they are collectively called synchrophasors.

Figure 1. A phasor measurement unit (PMU) gathers and processes the data on voltage magnitude and phase angle from powerline sensors.

To gather and analyze this data effectively, utilities need to have data acquisition, processing, and visualization, all working seamlessly across platforms and systems. To meet these demands, National Instruments (NI), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and OSIsoft used the Intel® IoT Platform as the foundation for a “best of breed” PMU.

This smart, connected PMU builds on the interoperability, connectivity, security, scalability, and manageability features of the IntelIoT Platform. It comes with open code that lets grid owners get deeper and faster insight into problems, so they can optimize transmission and distribution (T&D).

Configurable, high-performance data acquisition

The heart of the PMU is the customizable NI cRIO-9038 CompactRIO Platform. This platform can be programmed to have many personalities, such as power quality assurance, smart switch, or recloser. In this instance, it is set up as a PMU that can be located at any point in the grid, including on top of power poles or at substations.

A fundamental feature of the CompactRIO Platform is its combination of a processor for control and analysis, and an FPGA for hardware-based data processing. Specifically, the cRIO-09038 uses an Intel® Atom™ processor E3825 with the performance to run complex algorithms and control routines, and a Xilinx Kintex-7 160T FPGA with the configurability to keep up with changing standards and protocols.

Using the cRIO platform, processor and I/O modules can be exchanged as needed, giving designers an upgrade path as data gathering and processing requirements increase. In this case, the cRIO-09038 comes equipped with gigabit Ethernet interfaces, USB support, serial ports, and an operating temperature range of -40˚C to 70˚C to handle extreme environments. The whole system is programmed using NI’s high-level LabVIEW graphical system design software.

Moving in from the edge, the PMU data is passed to centralized servers powered by HPE Proliant DL380 Gen9 servers (Figure 2). The latest versions of these servers feature Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v4 with 2500-MHz DDR4 memory to accelerate time to insight. These servers function as phasor data concentrators (PDCs) and are rack mountable so they can scale to handle as many PMUs as needed.

The final stage in the synchrophasor solution is data analytics and visualization. This is the role of OSIsoft PI System, a highly secure, NERC CIP-qualified system that integrates and correlates the data with traditional operational electric grid information (Figure 3). It complies with C36.118, the IEEE standard for the measurement of synchronized phasors of power-system current and voltages. In effect, the PI System’s visualization and analytics help utilities fully understand what’s going on with their grid network, while its early-warning system helps operators react to problems quickly.

A clear vision for the smart grid

As the smart grid continues to expand, designers are being asked to help utilities face challenges such as the distribution of renewable energy, changing load requirements, more regulations, lower cost, scalability, reliable communications, security, and fast and accurate analysis for improved operator response times.

These requirements call for smart PMUs like the one built by NI, HPE, and OSI. Their synchrophasor is end-to-end, high-capacity, validated and tested, remotely managed, and cost-effective via standards-based components. This improves service and reduces overall cost.

And of course this is only one way you can start building a smarter grid. To see more design solutions, take a look at the Solutions Directory.

Hi,

I try to make Fedora 18 MR2, before this I use Timesys Fedora 18 Remix Gold and MR1. First I download  package F18_MR2_SW_BKC.tar.bz2 , read your user guide ( Baytrail_Linux_MR2_Integration_Guide_Rev 1.0.pdf ). After I download Fedora from fedora arhive. I make step 1 - 26 after, I use documentation for EMGD  because in this documentation I have information about version of packge and link of repository.

After step 26 I Install :

  • inputproto-2.3.1
  • xorg-server-1.14.5
  • xorg-x11-drv-evdev-2.7.3-5
  • libdrm-2.4.52
  • mesa-10.2.1
  • glu-9.0.0
  • cairo-1.12.14
  • emgd-sna-2.0-3900.i386.rpm

After I  make xorg.txt with CED  and copy in folder /etc/X11/  as .conf file, and  use command  /usr/bin/startx .  After that command fedora restarts and  I can't use mouse and keyboard.

My xorg.conf file
